Don’t Ignore These Strange Noises in Your Car

Strange noises in your car?

You may not know it, but your car always speaks to you. It may be hard to understand at first, especially if you’re not a “car whisperer,” but it is imperative to listen closely when you hear a strange noise in your car. These noises could be a strange sound that indirectly says your car isn’t that good old reliable anymore. Often, it is a signal to visit your trusted mechanic for a thorough maintenance check.

We gathered the top 3 noises we usually experience from our clients:

  1. Squealing sound when starting the car
  2. Humming sound when accelerating
  3. Knocking sound under the hood

Squealing sound when starting the car

What does it sound like? It’s a loud squealing sound that gradually fades as you start the car.

What it means: If you hear the squealing sound at the front of the car, it might be a sign of a broken serpentine belt. The serpentine belt is an essential part of your vehicle’s systems. It is a rubber surrounding the pulleys and wheels in front of the car engine.

What caused this: The most common cause of a broken serpentine belt is wear and tear. After prolonged use, the belt can become brittle, causing it to crack and slip.

What to do: The best way to resolve this is to check your serpentine belt. If you see any signs of wear and tear, replace them immediately.

What can happen if ignored: If you leave the damaged serpentine belt as it is, your air conditioning won’t work, and your car might suddenly stop.

Humming sound when accelerating

What does it sound like? A low humming sound gets louder as you accelerate the car.

What it means: If you hear this humming sound, it can mean that your tires are worn out. New tires do not usually make any sound. On the other hand, old tires are loud and can even indicate that your tires are underinflated.

What caused this: This is caused by wear and tear. Tires can get damaged or worn out.

What to do: Replace your old tires as soon as you can. However, if your tires are relatively new, they may need a little air. It is also best to have routine tire maintenance. This way, you can always check the state of your wheels.

If ignored, you can become prone to road accidents or even be stranded on the road.

Knocking sound under the hood

What does it sound like? A knocking sound coming from the engines increases in volume as you accelerate.

What it means: This sound is usually referred to as “engine knock.” This means that there may be the improper detonation of the fuel inside engine cylinders. It can also mean that certain parts of your engine need replacement or checking.

What caused this: This may be caused by a drop in oil pressure or if you have dirty oil in your engines.

What to do: The best way to address this is to go to a mechanic. There are many causes for an engine knock, and having a professional inspect your car is the optimal way to pinpoint the source of the problem.

What can happen if ignored: Road accidents and engine malfunctions are possible if this is not addressed as soon as possible.
